Part of our complete guide to how much an exhibition stand costs — read that for the full UK & Europe pricing picture across every format.

The question comes up in almost every first conversation we have with a new client: should I buy a custom-built stand or invest in a modular system? The answer depends entirely on how you exhibit — but the financial case is almost always more one-sided than people expect.

This is the honest cost comparison. Not a sales pitch — a calculation. Based on real costs, real logistics and real build numbers from T3 projects across the UK and Europe. If you want to understand the wider picture first, our guide on how to choose a high-performance exhibition stand covers the strategic context, and our 2026 cost guide has the UK pricing benchmarks.

The Comparison

What Are We Actually
Comparing?

First — a definition of terms, because these words get used loosely in the exhibition industry.

01

Custom-Built Exhibition Stand

A bespoke stand designed and built from scratch for a specific event — typically from timber, MDF, acrylic and steel. Every component is made to order. After the show it is dismantled and goes to landfill. The next show requires a new build at full cost. There is no carry-over investment. Our analysis of why the industry is moving away from single-use builds explains why this model is becoming commercially and environmentally untenable.

Custom builds are used by brands who exhibit once or twice a year and want maximum visual impact at a single flagship event. For those brands, our bespoke exhibition stands page covers what visual ambition is possible within the T3 system — including curves, custom RAL finishes and premium architectural treatments.

02

Modular Exhibition Stand

A precision-engineered structural system that assembles without tools, packs flat for transport and reassembles identically at the next show. Graphics are the only element that changes between events — the aluminium framework, connectors, lighting and accessories are reused indefinitely. The T3 modular framework is the same system used by L’Oréal, Gucci, Icelandair and VICE Golf — brands with zero tolerance for visual compromise.

Modular systems are used by brands who exhibit regularly — typically three or more times per year. The full benefits of modular exhibition stands go well beyond cost savings: faster builds, lower freight, simpler storage and a sustainability profile that meets modern corporate ESG requirements. See also our piece on modular stands in 2025 — flexibility, sustainability and impact.

The Numbers

The Real Cost Breakdown.
Show by Show.

The comparison below is based on a 6×3m exhibition stand at three UK shows per year — at venues like ExCeL London, NEC Birmingham or Manchester Central. These are real market figures — not estimates designed to flatter the modular case. For a full breakdown across stand types and sizes, see our exhibition stand costs guide.

YR1

Year 1 — The Investment Year

Custom build per show: £15,000–£20,000. Three shows = £45,000–£60,000. Zero carry-over.

T3 modular system: £7,500–£10,000 for the initial framework, graphics and installation. Shows 2 and 3 = graphics refresh only. Total Year 1: approximately £10,000–£14,000.

Year 1 saving: £31,000–£46,000. Even in Year 1 the cost differential is significant.

YR2

Year 2 — Where Modular Pulls Away

Custom build: Full rebuild cost again. £45,000–£60,000. Zero accumulated benefit from Year 1.

T3 modular: Graphics only — £1,500–£3,000 per show. Three shows = £4,500–£9,000. The structural framework costs nothing additional. This is why reusable exhibition stands are reshaping how brands budget for their programmes — the economics are simply too compelling to ignore.

Year 2 saving: £36,000–£51,000.

YR3

Year 3 — The Full Picture

Custom build 3-year total: £135,000–£180,000. Nine shows. Nine builds. Nine skips to landfill.

T3 modular 3-year total: £19,000–£32,000. One structural investment. Graphics refreshed as needed. For a strategic perspective on why this compounding matters beyond the numbers, see our guide to strategic exhibition systems vs standalone builds.

3-year total saving: £103,000–£148,000 on a 6×3m stand at three shows per year.

Hidden Costs

The Costs Nobody
Puts in the Quote.

The build cost is only part of the picture. Custom stands carry a set of additional costs that rarely appear in the initial quote but materialise every show. Our piece on maximising exhibition stand impact covers how brands avoid these traps in practice.

01

Skip Hire & Waste Disposal

A 6×3m custom timber stand generates approximately 800kg–1,200kg of waste after the show. Skip hire and site clearance typically adds £800–£1,500 to every build. A T3 eco-friendly modular stand generates zero structural waste — every component returns to inventory. Our 15 strategies for a more sustainable exhibition stand covers the full environmental picture.

02

Specialist Installation Labour

Custom timber builds require specialist joiners and often multi-day installation windows — £1,600–£2,400 in labour per show. T3’s tool-free exhibition stands are assembled by your own team in 2–4 hours — no specialist contractors required at any venue, from Edinburgh EICC to Bristol to ExCeL London.

03

Storage Between Shows

T3 modular components flat-pack into compact cases — you can use T3’s UK and European storage service or store them in a standard warehouse bay. And unlike custom builds, the graphics themselves store easily — our guide on how exhibition graphics should be stored, reused or repurposed covers best practice.

04

Freight & Logistics

A 6×3m custom timber stand weighs 400–600kg and requires a dedicated lorry. A T3 equivalent weighs 80–120kg and ships in a standard van. This lighter footprint is one reason Europe’s events industry is scaling with modular systems rather than against them — and why T3’s France facility serves European shows without ATA carnets.

When you add skip hire, specialist labour, storage and freight, a custom stand at a single UK show can cost £20,000–£30,000 all-in. A T3 modular stand at the same show — after the first year — costs £2,000–£4,000. See our full stand costs guide →

Honest Advice

When Does Custom
Actually Make Sense?

Custom Makes Sense When:

You exhibit once a year at a single flagship event. You need architectural elements that no modular system can achieve — though this is rare. T3 curves to 0.5mm tolerance, works with fashion brands and has been approved for luxury retail environments by Gucci and Armani. See our guide on what curves and angles can do for the full structural possibilities.

Modular Makes Sense When:

You exhibit two or more times per year. You attend shows at different venues with different floor plans. You have ESG reporting requirements — our sustainable exhibition systems page and the discussion in why 2025 marked a turning point for modular displays are both relevant. You want to build a consistent visual identity across your exhibition programme — something our strategic exhibition systems guide addresses directly.

Real Proof

Brands That Made
The Switch.

01

ThreatSpike — Three Shows, One Structure

ThreatSpike’s T3 stand was built for three consecutive shows — reconfigured for each venue’s floor plan and updated with fresh graphics for each campaign. Zero rebuild cost after the first show. This compounding value is exactly what modular stands are doing to sustainable events — making it financially irrational not to reuse. See the project →

02

Icelandair — 2025 Stand Confirmed for 2027

Icelandair’s T3 island stand was confirmed for reuse at the 2027 edition at the point of commissioning. Two years of ROI built in from day one. This is what the reusable exhibition stands model looks like in practice — not a sustainability claim, a business decision. See the project →

03

YSL Beauty — Four Scandinavian Cities, One Structure

YSL Beauty toured the same T3 structure across four Scandinavian cities. Same cases, same components, zero rebuild. The full story is covered in our T3 × L’Oréal Luxe feature and our piece on custom retail display with modular T3 frames. See all T3 projects →
