If you have spent any time researching modular exhibition stand systems in the UK or Europe, two names will keep appearing: T3 and Aluvision. They are the two reusable aluminium frameworks that most premium stands are actually built on, whatever the contractor’s branding around them. The question we get asked, almost weekly, is some version of: “Which one should I be using?”

This is the honest, technical answer — written by the people who designed and patented T3, with full credit given where Aluvision genuinely does something well. If you are choosing between the two systems, or trying to understand what your stand contractor is actually quoting you for, this is the article we wish existed when we kept being asked the question.

✦ At A Glance

  • T3 Systems: Invented 1981 in Harlow, UK. Globally patented twist-and-lock connector. 100% tool-free. Manufactured in the UK & France. 2× Queen’s Award for Enterprise. 25,000+ projects across 40+ countries.
  • Aluvision: Founded 2004 in Belgium. Aluminium profile frames with thumb-bolt connectors. Made from 70% recycled aluminium. Strong LED tile integration (Hi-LED 55). Sold via a network of regional partners.
  • Quickest takeaway: T3 wins on speed of assembly, reusability without bolts, and shape flexibility. Aluvision wins on integrated LED video walls and recognition in the European agency network. Both are premium reusable systems — the right choice depends on what you exhibit and how often.

Background — Two Systems, Two Origin Stories

Both systems were invented to solve the same problem: the exhibition industry’s reliance on single-use timber construction, with all the labour, waste, and inflexibility that came with it. They arrived at their solutions twenty years apart, from opposite ends of Europe, and made very different engineering decisions.

T3 — Harlow, 1981

T3 was developed by Jonathan Evitt at our facility in Harlow, Essex. The defining innovation was the cross-aperture twist-and-lock connector — a patented joint that allows aluminium extrusions to be connected to each other at any point, any angle, with a single quarter-turn and no tools. The system has been refined continuously since 1981, is now in its multiple-generation form, and remains globally patented. Tecna Display Ltd manufactures every connector and extrusion exclusively at our Harlow facility and our French facility in Trappes. There are no licensed third-party manufacturers.

Aluvision — Deinze, Belgium, 2004

Aluvision was founded by two Belgian exhibition stand builders who, frustrated by the lack of a suitable modular framework on the market, designed their own. Their system uses extruded aluminium profile frames in fixed module sizes (typically 992mm and 1488mm modules in standard heights of 2480mm and 2976mm), connected via internal thumb-bolt connectors. The frames carry fabric, dibond, or LED tile infill, with the company’s Hi-LED 55 video tile system being a defining product.

The Connector — Where The Two Systems Fundamentally Differ

This is the single most important technical difference between T3 and Aluvision, and it determines almost everything downstream — build speed, design freedom, reusability, and labour cost.

T3: a single connector, anywhere

T3’s patented connector engages with apertures running continuously along every face of every extrusion. This means a vertical post can connect to a horizontal beam at any height — 200mm from the floor, 1340mm, 2587mm, anywhere. No drilling, no bracket, no pre-defined module. The connector locks with a quarter turn of the hand. No tools. No bolts.

The practical effect is that T3 stands have no fixed module size or grid. A T3 design can produce curves, asymmetric shapes, mezzanines, hanging elements, and irregular footprints without the structure betraying any underlying grid. The same handful of connector types builds a 3m x 3m corner stand and a 220-booth conference hall — like the recent Boots Conference build we did, or the L’Oréal Luxe multi-brand stand combining Prada, YSL, and Urban Decay on a single T3 island.

Aluvision: thumb-bolt connectors at module joints

Aluvision frames connect to each other at their edges, using internal thumb-bolt connectors that lock the frames together. This is a tool-free operation (you tighten the thumb-bolt by hand), but it is fundamentally different from T3’s any-point connection. Aluvision stands are constructed from pre-engineered modules — the 992mm-wide frame, the 1488mm-wide frame, corner frames, curved frames — each of which is connected at its edge to the next module.

This is faster than wood-and-bolt construction, and the resulting stand looks clean — particularly with hidden profiles. But it does mean the design is constrained to whatever can be built from the available module sizes. To produce a truly bespoke shape, the contractor has to use Aluvision’s specialised frames (curved profiles, “perfect corner” frames) or supplement with non-Aluvision construction.

“T3’s connector lets aluminium meet aluminium anywhere. Aluvision’s modules join at fixed edges. That single engineering difference is why T3 produces curves and asymmetric shapes natively, and why Aluvision relies on its module library.”

Build Time And Labour Cost

This is where the connector difference matters in pounds and pence. As we cover in our how to design an exhibition stand piece, labour is typically 20–35% of total stand cost when you include both build-up and breakdown. On overtime and weekend rates at major UK venues, that share rises further.

A typical 6m x 4m T3 modular stand assembles in roughly 6–8 hours with a two-person crew. The equivalent Aluvision stand of similar complexity will typically take 10–14 hours — not because Aluvision is slow, but because thumb-bolt edge connections are a more deliberate operation than T3’s any-point quarter-turn lock, and module-based construction usually requires more individual connection points.

For a single-show, never-to-be-reused build, this 4–6 hour difference may not matter much. For an exhibitor doing 5+ shows per year, the cumulative build labour saving with T3 typically pays for the system’s small price premium within 12–18 months.

Shape Flexibility And Design Freedom

If you are designing premium retail displays, luxury beauty activations, sporting environments, or anything with a non-rectangular footprint, this is the section that matters most.

What T3 produces natively

  • Curved walls of any radius
  • Asymmetric ceiling features and hanging banners
  • Multi-level mezzanines with irregular floor plates
  • Sculptural elements, arches, and free-form structures
  • Reception desks, plinths, and product staging built from the same connector family

You can see this in practice on our luxury retail display and brand activation pages — particularly the YSL Beauty Scandinavia roadshow, the Duca del Cosma luxury golfwear island at PGA Orlando, and the Icelandair illuminated island.

What Aluvision produces well

  • Clean rectangular booths with seamless fabric finish
  • Hi-LED 55 video walls integrated flush into the structure
  • “Perfect corner” 90° corners with no visible vertical frame
  • Multi-level structures using standard frame heights
  • Reception counters and standardised display elements

Aluvision excels when the design brief is rectilinear and the budget centres on integrated digital displays. If your stand is built around a Hi-LED 55 video wall, Aluvision is the system the LED tile was designed for, and it shows.

LED Integration And Digital Displays

This is the area where Aluvision has historically had a clear advantage and where the comparison is closest. The Hi-LED 55 panel was engineered specifically to drop into the Aluvision frame, giving a flush, seamless video wall with no visible bezels and minimal cabling overhead. For brands whose stand is fundamentally a video-led experience — major consumer tech launches, automotive shows, certain conference environments — this is genuinely difficult to beat off-the-shelf.

T3 takes a different approach: rather than tying the framework to a single proprietary LED product, we engineer LED integrations on a project basis. Our T3 Wandlight system handles backlit fabric and indirect illumination natively. For video walls, we integrate third-party LED panels (Unilumin, ROE, Absen, and others) into the T3 framework using custom mounting profiles. The result is a more flexible specification — you can choose the LED panel that suits the project, rather than committing to one product family — but it requires more upfront engineering than dropping a Hi-LED 55 into a fixed Aluvision frame.

The honest summary: if your stand is 60%+ LED video wall, Aluvision is a strong choice. If your stand is a varied mix of graphics, lighting, product displays, and selective video, T3 gives you more design freedom to spend the budget where it matters.

Sustainability And Carbon Footprint

Both systems are dramatically more sustainable than single-use timber construction. The comparison between the two is closer than either would have you believe.

Aluvision’s published figures cite 70% recycled aluminium content in their frames. T3’s aluminium extrusions are fully recyclable and we offer a non-anodised option that reduces the embodied energy of finishing. Both systems are reusable across multiple shows, which is the single biggest sustainability factor in exhibition stand design — far larger than the recycled content of the raw material.

The genuinely meaningful differences are:

  • Reuse lifespan. T3 frames have a documented operational life of 20+ years with regular reconfiguration. Aluvision frames have a similar reusability profile but with more wear at the thumb-bolt connection points.
  • Transport efficiency. T3’s extrusion-and-connector design packs flatter and lighter per square metre of finished wall than Aluvision’s frame-based system, reducing transport emissions per show.
  • Manufacturing location. T3 is manufactured in the UK and France, reducing transport for European projects. Aluvision is manufactured in Belgium and distributed globally.

Total Cost Of Ownership

Both systems sit at the premium end of the modular market. Headline purchase prices are broadly comparable; the cost differences emerge in three places.

1. Build labour, repeated across shows

As covered above, T3’s faster assembly compounds in your favour the more often you exhibit.

2. Component flexibility on size changes

If you book a 6m x 4m stand at one show and a 4m x 3m at the next, T3 reconfigures from the same component pool — you may not need to buy or hire anything additional. With Aluvision, smaller stands may require a different set of standard modules; you either own multiple module sizes or hire the gap.

3. Graphics — independent of the frame

Both systems take silicone-edge fabric graphics that are reasonably interchangeable in concept. T3’s graphic tensioning channel is integrated into the extrusion itself; Aluvision uses a 15mm SEG bead. The print cost is similar between the two; the labour to refit graphics is faster with T3 because there are no module joins to align around.

When To Choose Which

Honestly, both systems will serve a sophisticated exhibitor well. Here is how we would advise on the choice if you came to us with a blank brief.

Choose T3 if:

  • You exhibit at multiple shows per year in different floor plans
  • Your designs feature curves, asymmetric shapes, or sculptural elements
  • You want the fastest possible build and breakdown
  • You are a UK or European brand and value local manufacturing
  • You want a single connector family that scales from a 3m x 3m stand to a full conference hall
  • You operate across exhibition stands, retail displays, brand activations, and showroom fit-outs and want one framework that handles all four

Choose Aluvision if:

  • Your stand is fundamentally a large LED video wall environment
  • Your designs are predominantly rectangular and large-format
  • You work primarily with a contractor who is heavily invested in the Aluvision component pool
  • The Hi-LED 55 tile system is central to your visual concept

“T3 vs Aluvision is not a question of which system is better in absolute terms. It is a question of which engineering philosophy fits your design — any-point connector freedom, or premium module-based predictability.”

The Bottom Line

If you are choosing between modular systems for a stand programme of any reasonable scale, you are making the right strategic call regardless of which of these two you pick. Both are dramatically better than single-use timber. Both will pay back their upfront cost within two to four shows. Both produce stands that look fully bespoke when designed well.

Where T3 wins — and we are saying this as the manufacturer, so weigh it accordingly — is freedom of shape, speed of assembly, and the single-system answer to every modular display need from a 9m² exhibition corner to a 1,000m² retail rollout. Where Aluvision wins is integrated video walls and a deep partner network across continental Europe.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is T3 cheaper than Aluvision?

Headline component prices are broadly comparable between the two systems — both sit at the premium end of the modular market. The meaningful cost difference shows up in build labour, which is typically 30–40% faster with T3 because of the any-point twist-and-lock connector. For exhibitors doing multiple shows per year, T3’s lower build labour generally produces a lower total cost of ownership over a 2–3 year programme.

Can I mix T3 and Aluvision components?

No. The connector geometry is fundamentally different — T3’s twist-and-lock and Aluvision’s thumb-bolt are not interchangeable, and the extrusion profiles do not mate. If you have existing investment in one system, it is generally better to stay with that system rather than mix. If you are starting from scratch, choose the one that fits your design language.

Which is more sustainable, T3 or Aluvision?

Both are significantly more sustainable than single-use timber and the difference between them is smaller than either’s marketing suggests. Aluvision uses 70% recycled aluminium content; T3 frames are fully recyclable with a non-anodised option. The bigger sustainability lever is reuse over multiple shows, where both systems perform well. See our reusable exhibition stands guide.

Does T3 do LED video walls like Hi-LED 55?

Yes — T3 integrates with third-party LED panel systems (Unilumin, ROE, Absen, and others) using custom mounting profiles engineered project-by-project. This gives you the freedom to specify the right LED panel for the project rather than committing to a single proprietary product family. For backlit fabric and indirect illumination, our T3 Wandlight system is built into the framework natively.

Where is T3 manufactured?

T3 is manufactured exclusively at our facilities in Harlow, UK and Trappes, France, by Tecna Display Ltd. There are no licensed third-party manufacturers. We hold the world’s largest stock of T3 components.

Which system is faster to set up?

T3, by a meaningful margin. A typical 6m x 4m T3 modular stand assembles in 6–8 hours with a two-person crew; the equivalent Aluvision stand typically takes 10–14 hours. The difference comes from T3’s any-point quarter-turn connector versus Aluvision’s edge-joined modules.

Can both systems be hired rather than purchased?

Yes — both systems are available on hire through contractor networks. T3 hire is available through Tecna Display Ltd and selected partners. Aluvision is hired through its global partner network. Hire usually makes sense for one-off events; purchase usually makes sense from 3+ shows per year.

Is T3 a patented system?

Yes. T3’s cross-aperture twist-and-lock connector is globally patented and internationally trademarked. We are the original inventor and sole manufacturer. Aluvision’s frame system is a proprietary design but the connector method is not patented in the way T3’s is.
